Sleeping Disorders Facts

Different types of sleep disorders keep people awake and prevent proper sleep. Sleep disorders range from the common, self-correcting issues to physical and neurological disorders. Sleep disorders prevent people from resting properly whether it's getting to sleep, staying asleep or cycling through the stages of sleep. Sleep is vital to the body's ability to heal, to process information, to digest, to relax and to function. While a person can stay awake for days on end, they will begin to suffer the debilitating effects of sleep deprivation such as a breakdown in cognitive functions, weight gain and a weakened immune system.

Difficulty in getting to sleep, staying asleep, waking through the night (and being unable to get back to sleep), or waking too early in the morning, when experienced for any length of time (and certainly for more than four or five weeks), warrants a diagnosis. You should also begin exploring natural sleep remedies that can help you get a better night's sleep, not to mention assisting you in effectively managing your problem.

Some of the most common sleep disorders include bruxism, delayed sleep phase syndrome (PSPS), hypopnea syndrome, insomnia, jet lag (or desynchronosis), narcolepsy, night terror (or sleep terror disorder, also referred to by its scientific name which is Pavor nocturnus), parasomnias, periodic limb movement disorder (PLMD) and rapid eye movement behavior disorder (RBD).

There are number of sleep disorders that appear in different people and even those with similar sleep disorders often display different symptoms. Many people say they survive nicely on four or five hours of sleep; others say they need nine or even ten hours. The sleep disorder narcolepsy can have complications such as cataplexy and hypnagogic hallucinations; cataplexy is the weakness or complete paralysis of the muscles, and hypnagogic hallucinations are vivid dreams that happen during the stage of sleep between being awake and being asleep.

There are other sleep disorders that have been studied and and researched thanks to sleep disorder studies. Narcolepsy is a condition wherein the person falls asleep involuntarily without any knowledge of doing so and sleeps irregularly at night. Restless leg syndrome is a condition that comes on during sleep. It involves periodic limb movement. These movements are involuntary and indicate that the person is not sleeping as effectively as they could be. REM behavior disorder while sleeping will manifest itself in involuntary muscle release which causes sometimes random twitches to organized usage of the limbs.

Many contend they have trouble getting to sleep if they go to bed hungry, but research indicates that large meals before going to bed can cause indigestion and even additional sleeping problems; it takes the body a minimum of 2 1/2 hours to go through most of the digestive process and to be fully digested it takes about four or five hours or more but taking enzymes with your meals can speed up the digestive process. Some tips for getting to sleep include taking a warm bath, drinking warm beverages like a warm herb tea for example - but no caffeine, getting a gentle massage, listening to soothing music, repeating positive affirmations or other natural remedies.
